May Bank Holiday Weekend Events

These past few weeks have brought us a whole load of bank holidays (not that we’re complaining), which gives venues in Manchester the perfect excuse to throw a riot of a weekend. We’ve gathered a few of the best parties going on in Manchester from Friday til Monday to keep you going all bank holiday.

Me Gusta

As you know from their residency here at MCR Live, Me Gusta don’t shy at the opportunity of throwing a party, and this time they’re bringing a line-up you’d be silly to miss. This Friday they’re heading to The Whiskey Jar, a lively bar on Tariff Street, notorious of course for it’s finest whiskey selection and all the popular events always going down there. Here’s the line-up so far, with more to be announced:

Cervo (Lumberjacks in Hell / Banana Hill) – North African infused house, highly praised for their genre spanning parties.

Rikki Humphrey – Having DJ’d all over the world, Rikki is known worldwide for his jaw dropping vinyl collection.

SNO – SNO is an incredible creative artist, as well as being one of the nicest people you’ll meet.

Jessica Jones (Live Jazz Flute) – From classical to Jazz, Jessica has been making huge steps with Me Gusta and is sure to fill the room.

John Haycock (Live Kora Player) – New to the Me Gusta scene, John has played many festivals around Europe and brings a new tone of African music to UK with his instrument.

Eastern Bloc Records

This Friday from 7pm, Eastern Bloc Records are hosting a night of live music for you and all your friends to come along to enjoy. With performances from Mark Turner, Kerrie and Mike Steel who are majorly rated for their live performances as well as their productions, they’re here to bring you a whole load of electro, electronic, house and techno music to warm your bank holiday up.

Entry to this gig is absolutely free and is will be buzzing from 7-11pm so make sure you head down to Stevenson Square this Friday night.

Twist and Shout

Twist and Shout are returning to The Venue nightclub to do just what is says on the tin. It’s the same event you know and love, providing all the best funk, soul and groove with a bit of Rock ‘n’ Roll thrown in for good measure.

With undeniable drink prices mixed with music you can’t help but dance to, it’s a night you can’t really go wrong with. Tickets can be purchased here.

PB&J, may bank holiday weekend events, MCR Live Blog


This Saturday night, Manchester favourites PB&J are presenting all the best Hiphop, funk, soul and R&B to kickstart your bank holiday. In the lovely venue of The Blue Pig,  the three DJ’s of PB&J are mixing the old with the new to keep dance vibes flowing throughout the night. You can expect to hear a selection of James Brown, A Tribe Called Quest, Aretha Franklin, Erykah Badu and Kaytranada thrown in with their own remixes and edits.

PB&J have played in pretty much every venue across Manchester’s NQ, Deansgate and Chinatown and are sure to fill out The Blue Pig this Saturday. The best thing about it? It’s absolutely free.

Funkademia and The Mint Lounge, May Bank Holiday weekend events, MCR Live blog


We only like to give you the best music and events in Manchester, so considering Funkademia are residents of ours at MCR Live, this night is pretty much guaranteed to be a good’un. The Mint Lounge is known to always throw a good night and Funkademia’s residency there’s brings guests from everywhere to the club every single Saturday to kick things off. This Saturday you can expect them to roll up with singing sensation, Peter Jay. Prepare yourself for a mix of Funk, Soul, Disco, Classic RnB and a whole lot of Hip Hop with Funkademia.

Sounds From The Other City

Sounds From The Other City is finally arriving this Sunday! Being one of the first festivals heading to Manchester this summer, it’s here to kick everything off big style. Over the past few years, Sounds From The Other City has hosted some early performances from some absolutely huge artists such as Alt-J, The Ting Tings, Lapalux and Sampha and is sure to bring the best upcoming talent from all over.

Venues across Chapel Street will be filled with festival highlights including OTOMO X, Spectres, Jack Ladder and BBC Philharmonic Orchestra & Ex Easter Island Head joined by acclaimed double recordist and violinist Laura Cannell.

Dave Clark 909 Manchester, May bank holiday weekend events, MCR Live Blog


The 909 April Bank Holiday event has announced Dave Clarke as their headline and to say we’re excited would be an understatement. 909, which is a sister venue to Liverpool’s favourite 303, has seen some huge electric names from Liverpool like John Digweed, Mr C  and Gary Beck.

Dance music guru Dave Clarke has been entertaining die hard ravers since the 90’s and is one of the most influential and unwavering dance music artists around. Having played some absolutely huge gigs, we can’t get enough of his uncompromising and unrelenting tracks and this Sunday is going to go off BIG style.

He joins one of Manchester’s best venues, Gorilla, this Sunday from 11pm – 4am and tickets can be purchased here.
