Disco Illusions 2nd Birthday - Marshall Jefferson - Manchester Gigs and Events- The Deaf Institute - MCR Live Blog

Disco Illusions 2nd Birthday w/ Marshall Jefferson

This February marks a special occasion for the Disco Illusions boys as they’ll have been dancing for two whole years. Over the past 24 months, they’ve had a whirlwind of a time with shows at Kendall Calling, Gorilla and regular sell-out gig at The Deaf Institute!

To help celebrate, the gang have enlisted the help of a man who knows a thing or two about parties, the Godfather of House himself, Marshall Jefferson! Having released ‘Move Your Body’ in 1986 and adding pianos to the genre for the first time, this song transformed house music forever. But he didn’t stop there. Marshall also went on to produce the first acid house track with Sleezy D.

Marshall’s sets consist of a journey through house music. With a huge focus on piano, he plays music that is both old and new. By collaborating Disco Illusion’s 2nd birthday with a set from Marshall Jefferson himself, this will be an exceptional chance to catch a musical pioneer in such an intimate environment. Support on the night comes from the usual Disco Illusions suspects who will be bringing their finest disco, funk and house along to the party. A party for all, disco dons and disco divas, get your flares at the ready, throw on the glitter and practise your best moves under the disco ball!

Win Tickets!

The party goes down on the 16th February and as a special treat, we’ve got a little giveaway. To win tickets for you and a friend to see Marshall Jefferson with the Disco Illusions boys this February, simply head to our Twitter and RT our pinned competition post! Other tickets are available here BUT they will not be around for long!

Check out this video of Marshall playing at The Lab and get a feel for what’s about to go down. For more event information, head here.

Dave Draws Customised Competition - Manchester Maps - Artist - Doodle Maps - Manchester Competition - MCR Live Blog

Dave Draws: Customised Competition!

Now it’s no secret that here at MCR Live we are HUGE fans of the Overdrawn gang, but Dave Draws is someone who just seems to get his work absolutely everywhere. Dave specialises in doodle mapwork and having worked all over Manchester for places such as Innside MCR, Unilad and Manchester Arndale with his mural to commemorate the Olympian and Paralympian Gold medalists to name just a few, he also incorporates his maps onto upholstery like cushions, sofas, footstools, mugs and more which can all be found in Afflecks, his online shop or at his monthly appearance at Didsbury Makers Market!

Although Dave is based in Manchester, he has worked all over. With maps of Sheffield, York, Liverpool and beyond, he also stretches to worldwide areas like Berlin and Hong Kong which he named one of his biggest achievements to date in a recent interview we had with him. Although he finds each place fascinating to explore and draw, Dave is eager to expand his work into even more places, and I have the feeling YOU can help us with just that.

Dave is offering to create a customised A3 map to one lucky winner! The winner can choose an area anywhere in the UK or abroad (just to mix things up a little) whether it’s your hometown, favourite holiday destination or somewhere more personal to you. Daves maps make an extremely unique feature to your home or even as a gift and with this sentimental twist it’s ever more special to you.

There are two simple ways to enter. Either head to our Facebook page which will invite you to like the competition post and comment with your favourite city, or simply give the competition a RT on twitter, however you must be following us or how else will you know if you’ve won?! The winner will be announced in exactly one week, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled!

Lost In Music Presents: Dr Packer, Disco Mums, DJ Paulette - Manchester gigs - Black Dog Ballroom - MCR Live Blog

LOST IN MUSIC PRESENTS: DR PACKER, DJ PAULETTE & DISCO MUMS

If there’s one thing we’re immensely excited for this summer, it’s Lost In Music coming to Underdog at Black Dog Ballroom New Wakefield Street on the 28th of this month! Manchester has caught the disco fever and with a lineup like this, we’re going to be absolutely bouncing.

Defected, Glitterbox Ibiza and Ministry of Sound resident Dr Packer, notorious for throwing unmissable nights is headlining this in a series of events celebrating the legendary New York disco clubs of the Eighties like Studio 54 and Limelight, together with the hedonistic mayhem of the old Space Terrace in Ibiza which you can catch here. Having won countless DJ awards, completed 16 international tours and owns his own record label ‘Interphase Music’, it’s no surprise that he’s caught the eye of Bootsy Collins, Joey Negro & Defected Records, Dimitri From Paris & Late Nite Tuff Guy.

In 2013 Greg began playing around with old Soul, Funk & Disco records in the studio and applying the same technique as if he was writing an original track and the results have been overwhelming to say the least. – Dr Packer was born!

One of the incredible acts that will be supporting him is DJ Paulette. Having mastered entertaining all over Europe, she’s spent over two decades making his mark as resident at some of the biggest clubs in the world. She has supported the cream of the dj establishment  –  from Gilles Peterson, Norman Jay, David Guetta, Laidback Luke, SHM, Afrojack, Bob Sinclar, Didier Sinclair, Fafa Monteco to Duke Dumont, Jaymo & Andy George, Junior Sanchez and Artwork. Throwing some of the best house, techno and disco beats, her award winning work for record labels, press, TV and radio has earned her a seat with some of the most respected DJ’s in the world. Not one of her sets have disappointed and she does not hold back or cut short so we cannot wait to see what she has in store for us.

Truly repping the Manc scene we have Disco Mums. Julie Wills, Jane Kettleton, Emma Joyce, Jane Slack & Geraldine Garrabet are a  DJ collective of seasoned clubbers and not even parenthood can get in the way of throwing a cracking party. Known for appearances at Manchester International Festival in the amazing Pavilion Square, Electric Elephant in Croatia, Back to Basics in Leeds and the legendary Red Laser Disco parties as residents, Disco Mums are extremely influenced by our beloved city and their roots are dug deep in nights like Electric Chair, Aficionado, Friends & Family, Homoelectric and Bugged Out. These gals don’t turn anything down and have fingers all in pies so you can expect anything from soul, house, techno, disco, boogie, reggae, italo or pop.

Lost In Music promoter and owner of The Pen and Pencil, Dan Pollard comments; “This is something I’ve wanted to do for a while – to put on some amazing parties in my home town with the best names in disco. Really can’t wait for everyone to come down and enjoy it.”

Want to get in on this for free?! Keep your eyes on our Facebook or Twitter for our upcoming competition giving you the chance to win tickets and have an absolutely banging night for absolutely nothing. To find out more, head to their website or purchase tickets here.

Skiddle is 16 - Manchester Club Night at Sound Control - MCR Live Blog

Skiddle’s 16th Birthday Party at Sound Control

If you’re looking for a party, you’ve come to the right place because this one is going to be a WHOPPER! This month marks our ticketing partner Skiddle’s birthday and they’re inviting some of their favourite acts from across the gigs, clubs and festivals spectrum along to make sure they kick it off in style!

They’re hosting this party at Sound Control in Manchester, which is already one of our favourite venues, and it’ll be kicking off over all three floors. Skiddle is one of the best and most reliable platforms to buy tickets for all the best gigs, raves, club nights, festivals and more but without you music lovers, there would be nothing. And this is exactly why they are so dedicated to toasting it all to you.

The lineup has recently been announced and is absolutely dreamy. You can expect to be blessed with the likes of Dutch Uncles, hip-hop supergroup The Mouse Outfit and lo-fi DIY trio Stealing Sheep. More of a fan of house and techno? Having visited worldwide hotspots like Ibiza, Amsterdam and Berlin’s Watergate, the legends that are Sidney Charles and Alexis Raphael will be smashing the decks. These guys are renowned for throwing some of the best club nights and are absolutely not something to miss out on. If that’s not enough, a very special guest is soon to be announced so make sure you keep your eyes peeled!

What I’m super pumped for, is the festival floor. Yup, you heard that right! Bringing the party will be half of The 2 Bears, Raf Daddy and Mr Wilson’s Second Liners who played renditions of tracks like ATB’s 9pm and Livin Joy’s ‘Dreamer’ last year at their ‘Festival no.6’.

Tickets for the party are free of charge, however, they will go suuuper fast and will be dispensed on a first come first serve basis. Guaranteed entry tickets cost £10, BUT if you keep your eyes peeled on our Facebook and Twitter page, you’ll see a naughty competition on the horizon which could help you out big time!

Twenty TwentyTwo Competition

Like alcohol? Like table-tennis? Well… how about both combined together?

If the idea of this excites you as much as us, Twenty TwentyTwo is the bar you need to be down at – as a bonus they play all the music you want to hear with some dead, dead cool decor.

Tucked away in the Northern Quarter, it is really one of the cool under-gound hubs of Manchester nightlife (in our humble opinions, anyway). In fact, we like the bar so much that not only do we head down on a regular basis, but we’ve teamed up with the team to give away a pretty ace prize.

If you want to win free booze – I repeat, FREE BOOZE – now is your chance! We’ve teamed up with the bar to give you the opportunity to win a £30 bar tab for you to enjoy whenever you want. Put away your Easter eggs – get your mates together and think of it as an Easter treat, on us!

So… how can I be in with the chance of winning the £30 bar tab, you ask?

Last week the MCR Live team decided to pit themselves in a battle of ego’s  throwing the table tennis competition of table tennis competitions. Kit was bought, egos were well and truly on show all in effort to see just how long we could keep the rally for.

After booking out a table, collecting our rackets and balls we thought to ourselves – why keep this an in-office competition?

So we’re opening up the table to you too – in order to be in with a chance of winning a £30 bar tab at Twenty Twenty-Two, all you have to do is head to our Twitter and Facebook pages to find the video and reply with a guess to how many shots we managed to rack up in our rally. Then Like and Share the video on Facebook, or Retweet and follow us on Twitter.

Remember – ‘sharing is caring’, sharing the post with your mates ups your chances of a free round so it’d be silly not to… right?

Good Luck!

Terms & Conditions

MCR Live and Twenty TwentyTwo reserve the right to withdraw and withhold the competition.
The competition will close at 6pm at 17th April & the winner will be chosen at random from correct answers.
To enter the competition you must like the post, share the video and comment below with the guess of how many shots there are in the rally.
The prize is a £30 bar tab and an hour’s free table tennis

Superfood

Win Superfood Tickets!

Superfood are back in Manchester, and not the Superfood that’ll give you glowing skin and stronger nails. That’s right, Superfood are touring UK and on Monday 20th March they are hitting Sound Control, and now is your once in a lifetime chance to win Superfood tickets!

Recently, the band released their new single ‘Double Dutch’ which didn’t only top most of their previous tracks, but brought a completely new sound to their music and enabled the band to explore a whole new level. A sample-led track gives a smooth dreamy air to the song and it’s what we instantly fell in love with and we’re now left wondering if this is going to set the tone for their next album coming out later this year – we certainly hope so! Here’s a glimpse of Double Dutch to get you doubly excited:

We’ll be hoping to hear some banging tunes from their last album “Don’t Say That” and 2013 some from album “Bubbles” but what we’ve really got our fingers crossed with is some sneak peeks into their new album. The band are notorious for holding some kick-ass gigs and it’ll definitely be a night you will never forget!

If you’re desperate to get your hands on tickets, but still a long way from payday, we’re here to save the day! To get the chance to win not one, but TWO tickets to Superfood at Sound Control on the 20th March, be sure to like our Facebook page MCR Live and comment with your favourite Superfood track on our pinned competition post and who knows, you may be the lucky one! So what are you waiting for? GO GO GO!
